About Us

Who We Are

Since we opened our doors for business in the lakes region, we could have never imagined we'd have grown to where we are today in this thriving and growing community. We provide our customers with service and products equal to the large, corporately owned banks, but with the level of service and 'person-ability' we all like to enjoy. We want you to get to know us so that we can get to know you.

Our History

Farmers State Bank Roses MarketLake Region Bank, previously known as Farmers State Bank, first opened its doors in New London on January 12, 1915 across the street from its present location in the building known as Rose Meat Market. Ground breaking for the new building didn’t begin until the spring of 1915. The bank was started with forty shareholders contributing a total of $12,000. The original board of directors was made up of M. O. Oppegaard, president; A. T. Thorne, vice president; L. E. Covell, managing officer; P. O. Johnson; Ole Ringness; F. H. Smithson and J. A. Johnson.

Farmers State Bank Original BuildingAlvin Ness came to the bank in December of 1923 and became the managing officer following the death of Mr. Covell in August of 1936. In 1970 Paul Vollan and Harvey Hanson purchased the bank from Alvin Ness. Alvin retired that year and Paul took over as president. In 2000 Paul Vollan partially retired and Clark Vollan became president.

Farmers State Bank Second StoryFarmers State Bank AdditionOver the years the New London bank building has undergone considerable changes. In 1961 an addition was added and the existing building underwent extensive remodeling. In 1975 major changes were made to further modernize the facility. The second story was added in 1980.

With a desire to expand the bank’s services, Paul and Harvey opened a branch office in Sunburg, MN on September 30, 1977. In 1981 Farmers State Bank expanded to Willmar, opening a branch at the Skylark Mall. In 1988 a two-story structure was constructed in its present location to house the growing business.

With the decline of farm land in northern Kandiyohi County and the increase in residential homes in the lakes area, Farmers State Bank changed its name to Lake Region Bank in 2003 to better represent the people it serves.

Celebrating 45 Years

Paul Vollan purchased Lake Region Bank, formerly Farmers State Bank, with partner Harvey Hanson on Nov. 3, 1970. When he walked through the door, there were only six employees and one branch. Today there are three branches and 50 employees.
